Sutcliffe Vineyards is an estate winery deep in McElmo Canyon, about 12 miles west of Cortez. The high-desert setting, on-site kitchen and bookable vineyard or barrel experiences make it the region's most complete destination winery rather than a quick urban tasting-room stop.

What to expect

The tasting room sits among the vines at roughly 5,340 feet in a remote canyon setting. Sutcliffe says it has made wine in Southwest Colorado since 1995 and grows and hand-picks its own grapes.

A farm-fresh kitchen serves charcuterie, hummus and seasonal specials. Wood-fired pizza is seasonal, so call if food is an important part of the visit. Guided vineyard tours and private barrel tastings require an appointment.

Before you go

  • Use the Road G directions on the official visit page; the winery is well west of central Cortez.
  • Book vineyard tours and private barrel tastings in advance.
  • Call to confirm seasonal kitchen and pizza availability.
  • The official site publishes shorter daily hours after daylight saving time.
